Place Description

Wat Chiang Man was built in 1292 and is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. The temple is an outstanding example of Lanna architecture. The oldest structure is the Chang Lom Chedi which is a large, gold-spired chedi supported by a square base of sixteen life-sized elephants. Wat Chiang Man is famous for several unusual Buddha images. The most revered is the Phra Kaew Kao or Crystal Buddha which is believed to have the power to bring rain and therefore it is taken around the city in a parade every year during the dry season.
