Place Description

Wat Phra Singh is located at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road, which is the east-west going main street of Chiang Mai's old city. The main Viharn of the temple dates back to 1512 but the real attraction of Wat Phra Singh is the smaller Lai Kam Ubosoth which houses the revered Phra Singh Buddha image brought to Thailand from Sri Lanka in the 14th century. The walls of the Ubosoth are coverer with murals depicting Lanna customs, dresses, and scenes from daily life hundreds of years ago and are famous for their details and period style. In the north-east corner of the temple compound is a small scripture repository which is the finest of its type in Northern Thailand.
