Place Description

Wat Chedi Luang is located at the very center of Chiang Mai's old city and houses Chiang Mai's city pillars. The temple and its prominent Chedi date back to the late 14th century. The massive Chedi measures 54x54 meters at the square base and was initially 82 meters tall - the largest building of all in the Lanna Kingdom. Although the height was reduced to less than half of its original size during an earthquake in 1545, the Chedi still stands out as the tallest structure in Chiang Mai's old city. Other buildings in the compound include the Lanna campus of the Mahamakut Buddhist University which is the northern campus for monks of the Thammayut sect.
